Invasion highway :by 1799 Russian military engineers had created the Georgian Military Highway which allowed the Russian Empire to annex Georgia in 1801 and the Soviets to invade and defeat the Menshevik government of Georgia in 1921.
Stalin was a native of Georgia (real name (real name Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili) who adopted the Russian pseudonym “steel”- Stalin. But his rule killed 80,000 Georgians and his regime tried and executed over 200,000 of his countrymen. Ambivalence about Stalin remains.
